웨슬리 연구(6)

오늘은 쉽게 쓴 웨슬리 설교집 두 권을 소개하도록 하겠습니다. 필자가 번역한 Lovett Weems의 책 John Wesley’s Message Today, (Abingdon Press, 1991)가 MTS Digital을 통해 전자책으로 출간을 준비 중에 있습니다.

미리 몇 분에게 소개하였는데 강화에서 목회하는 제 동기가 이 책을 읽더니 앞으로 목회 현장에 두 가지 자료가 더 있었으면 좋겠다고 제안하였습니다. 하나는 속회 매뉴얼이고, 또 하나는 웨슬리 설교를 목사들이 예배 시 그대로 설교할 수 있도록 쉽게 번역하면 좋겠다는 요청이었습니다.

영서로는 웨슬리 설교를 18세기 영어에서 오늘의 영어로 쉽게 풀어서 쓴 설교집들이 몇 권 나왔습니다. 쉽게 쓴 웨슬리 설교도 소개하며 번역본들을 비교하는 시간을 가져 보겠습니다.

먼저 웨슬리 설교 원문을 보겠습니다. “Salvation by Faith” Ⅰ. 5. 부분입니다. Albert C. Outler and Richard P. Heitzenrater eds., John Wesley’s Sermons: An Anthology, (Abingdon Press, 1991), 42.에서 인용합니다.

[Christian faith is then, not only an assent to the whole gospel of Christ, but also a full reliance on the blood of Christ; a trust in the merits of his life, death, and resurrection; a recumbency upon him as our atonement and our life, as given for us, and living in us; and, in consequence hereof, a closing with him, and cleaving to him, as our "wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption," or, in one word, our salvation.]

 

이 설교 부분을 Kenneth C. Kinghorn, John Wesley on Christian Beliefs: The Standard Sermons in Modern English, Vol. 1, (Abingdon Press, 2002), 39.과 비교해 보겠습니다. Kinghorn은 요즘 영어에서 잘 쓰지 않는 recumbency upon을 resting upon으로 바꾸었고, in consequence hereof를 The result of saving faith로, closing with him을 uniting with Christ로, cleaving to him을 adhering firmly to him으로 바꾸었습니다.

Kinghorn version으로 읽어 보겠습니다.
[Thus, Christian faith is more than an intellectual assent to the entire gospel of Christ. It also means a complete reliance on the blood of Christ; it is full trust in the merits of his life, death, and Resurrection. Saving faith is a resting upon Christ as our atonement and our life – a savior who gave himself for us and lives in us. The result of saving faith is uniting with Christ, and adhering firmly to him “who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”(1 Corinthians 1:30) In a word, Christ is our salvation.]

다음으로 William J. Abraham ed., Sermons on Several Occasions: Sermon 1-15, Vol. 1, (Wesley’s Foundery Books, 2021), 9.를 살펴 보겠습니다.
Abraham version은 원문을 그대로 살리면서 필요한 부분만 다른 단어로 바꾸었습니다. recumbency upon을 utter dependence upon으로, closing with him을 definite uniting with him으로 교체하였습니다.

Abraham version은 다음과 같습니다.
[Christian faith is then, not only an assent to the whole gospel of Christ; but also a full reliance on the blood of Christ; a trust in the merits of his life, death, and resurrection; an utter dependence upon him as our atonement and our life, as given for us, and living in us; and, in consequence of this, a definite uniting with him, and cleaving to him, as our “wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,” or, in a word, our salvation.]

 

그럼 이 부분을 조종남 번역본으로 읽어보겠습니다. 조종남 편역, 요한 웨슬레 설교선집, (서로사랑, 1998), 19-10.에서 인용합니다.
[이와 같이 그리스도인의 신앙이란 그리스도 복음 전체에 대한 동의일뿐 아니라 또한 그리스도의 보혈에 전적으로 의뢰하는 것, 즉 예수의 생명과 죽음과 부활의 공로를 신뢰하고 우리를 위하여 ‘자기를 버리고 또한 우리 안에 살아 역사하시는 우리의 대속이시요 생명이신’ 그리스도를 전적으로 의존하는 것입니다. (이것은 그리스도의 공로를 통하여 그의 죄가 용서받고, 하나님의 사랑으로 화해케 되었다는 확실한 자신입니다.) 그리하여 결국은 우리가 우리의 ‘지혜와 의와 성결과 구속이신’ 한 마디로 말해 우리의 구원이신 그에게 접붙여지는 것을 말합니다.]

이 부분을 필자의 동기가 부탁한대로 좀 더 설교체로 다듬어 실제 설교문으로 읽을 수 있도록 번역해 보겠습니다.
[그러므로 구원 얻는 믿음이란 무엇입니까? 그것은 그리스도께서 전한 복음 전체를 단지 머릿속으로 이해하는 것 그 이상입니다. 그것은 그리스도의 보혈을 전적으로 의지하는 것입니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 그리스도의 삶과 죽음과 부활을 통해서 주시는 공로를 온전히 의존해야 합니다.
구원 얻는 믿음은 그리스도를 우리의 속죄주요 생명주, 우리를 위해 자신을 내어주시고 우리 안에서 살아계신 구원주로서 의지하는 것입니다. 이런 믿음의 성도는 우리의 구원이신 그리스도와 연합하게 됩니다. 우리의 “지혜와 의로움과 거룩함과 구속”(고전 1:30)이 되시는 그리스도와 접붙여지게 됩니다.]

감리교회 목사님들은 메소디스트 교리적 표준(Methodist Doctrinal Standards)이 되는 웨슬리의 설교들을 실제 이해하기 쉬운 설교문으로 만드는 일에 힘써야 합니다. 이러한 노력은 웨슬리안 정신을 널리 전파하는 중요한 수단이 되기도 합니다.
