Summary of John Wesley’s Sermon
No. 110
Title: Free Grace(1739)
Text: Romans 8:32
Commentary: George Whitefield opened John Wesley’s way into the Revival in 1739. But there was a theological difference between them. Wesley preached against double predestination within weeks of the beginning of the Revival. In this sermon, Wesley dialectically criticized on the non-biblical double predestination.
Summary:
2. The grace or love of God is free in all and free for all.
4-5. Some say: No, it is free only to those whom God has ordained to life...
The greater part of God has ordained to death.
6-9. [Double predestination is non biblical.]
10-23. [Wesley’s defence for the doctrine of free grace.]
10. If this be so, then all preaching is in vain.
11-12. This directly tends to destroy that holiness which is the end of all the ordinances of God.
13-17. This destroys the comfort of religion, the happiness of Christianity.
18. This directly tends to destroy our zeal for good works.
19-23. This directly tends to overthrow the whole Christian revelation.
25. This dishonors the Father; it destroys all of his attributes.
27. This is the blasphemy; “I abhor the predestination.”
30. “Repent and turn away from your transgressions.”(Ezekiel 18:30)
“Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways.”(Ezekiel 33:11)
Prayer: God of love. We have decided to live in response to the grace of God’s great salvation.
O Holy Spirit, help us so. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
