The Greatest Love of All

 

Revelation 2:4

◎ ότι την αγαπην σου την πρωτην, αφηκες.

 

[ESV] You have abandoned the love you had at first.

[NAB] You have lost the love you had at first.

[NIV] You have forsaken the love you had at first.

 

[NASB] You have left your first love.

[NET] You have departed from your first love!

 

◎ αφιημι = verb. give up, keep no longer

◎ πρωτος = adjective. 1) first time, 2) first in rank, foremost, chief

 

◎ Better translation: You have kept no longer loving of God, the most important thing.

 

The Church in Ephesus(2:1~7)

2:2~3 Commendation:

         1) They have worked hard and have been patient.

         2) They have not tolerated sin and false teaching in the Church.

         3) They have suffered for Jesus.

2:4 Rebuke:

         1) They have left their first love.

2:5 Advice:

         1) Repent and recover the first love.

 

What is the first love?

◎ The love of God, as displayed by the redemption of Christ.(John 3:16)

◎ Saving grace accepting, pardoning, and sanctifying us.(Romans 8:30)

◎ Our responsible acts for the saving grace of God.(Galatians 5:14)
