Withstand in the evil day

 

◎ Ephesians 6:10~13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (Ephesians 6:13)

 

◎ Explanatory Notes

Verse 10

Be strong in the Lord - You must have strength, and strength of a spiritual kind, and such strength too as the Lord himself can furnish; and you must have this strength through an indwelling God, the power of his might working in you. (Clarke)

 

Verse 11

The wiles of the devil - The methods of the devil the different means, plans, schemes, and machinations which he uses to deceive, entrap, enslave, and ruin the souls of men. (Clarke)

 

Verse 12

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood - flesh and blood is a Hebraism for human beings. (Clarke)

Against principalities - Chief rulers; beings of the first rank and order in their own kingdom.

Powers - Authorities, derived from, and constituted by the above.

The rulers of the darkness of this world - The rulers of the world; the emperors of the darkness of this state of things.

Spiritual wickedness - Disguised falsehood in the garb of truth; Antinomianism in the guise of religion. (Clarke)

 

Verse 13

In the evil day - The day of temptation; the day when you are violently assaulted. (Barnes)

 

◎ Summary

The foes are so numerous and mighty, that unless clothed with the divine armor, victory will be impossible. (Barnes) So we need to put on the whole armor of God which he has provided for the Christian soldier.
