메소디즘(Methodism)에 관한 자료들
-존과 찰스 웨슬리 중심으로-

소개하는 목적:
존과 찰스 웨슬리에 관한 자료들을 한국교회에 소개한다는 것은 시대적 요청이라고 생각합니다. 이 땅에 개신교의 뿌리가 내려진 지 120여년이 지났지만 아직까지 한국의 개신교회는 전반적으로 개혁주의를 신학의 정통으로만 받아들이고 가르치려 해왔습니다. 일반적으로 웨슬리 신학을 제대로 배우거나 가르치는 일에 -감리교회나 성결교회 조차도- 무관심합니다. 오히려 잘못된 대체 신학의 영향으로 성경을 자기중심적, 기복주의적으로 해석해 왔습니다.
필자는 이러한 신학의 빈곤이 한국 교회가 성숙해지지 못하는 근본 원인 중 하나라고 생각합니다. 신론의 오해는 하나님을 전능자의 하나님으로만 만들었고, 복 주시는 분으로만 가르쳐왔습니다. 기독론의 부족은 그리스도를 칭의의 원인으로만 알게 하였습니다.
또한 교회론의 부재는 어떠합니까? 결과적으로 교회의 주인을 사람으로 만들었고, 교회 안에 서열과 계층을 만들었습니다. 신학은 곧 성경을 올바로 해석하는 과정을 의미합니다. 신학의 부재는 성서 해석에도 영향을 미치게 되는데, 예를 들어 구속사적 관점으로만 성경을 해석하면 성경에 담긴 하나님의 메시지를 통전적으로 보는데 한계를 가져오게 마련입니다.
기도를 많이 하는 한국교회가 성숙하지 못하고 깨끗하지 못한 이유는 기도의 신학이 부재하기 때문입니다. 구하는 기도만 가르쳤지 정화하는 기도는 가르치지 못했기 때문입니다.
웨슬리 신학은 이러한 한계를 극복하고자 노력합니다. 웨슬리 신학은 하나님을 삼위일체론적으로 이해하였고, 초월하지만 내재하시는 하나님으로 설명하였습니다. 또한 그리스도를 칭의의 원인뿐만 아니라 성화의 원인으로 더욱 강조하였습니다. 그리고 교회 안에 누구나 평등하며 모두가 하나님의 나라의 청지기라는 진리를 가르쳤습니다.
무엇보다 웨슬리는 성경을 읽고, 묵상하고, 듣는 근본 목적이 ‘하늘 가는 길’ 곧 ‘구원 얻는 지혜’에 있다고 강조하였습니다. 이러한 웨슬리의 성경관이 회복되지 못한다면 한국교회는 더 이상의 부흥을 기대할 수 없을 것입니다.
미약하지만 한국교회에 웨슬리에 관한 책들을 알리고, 웨슬리의 깊은 영성의 글들을 소개한다면 언젠가 한국교회가 한 목소리로 회개하고 하나님 나라를 위해 함께 섬기는 날이 올 것이라 기대하며 주제별로 웨슬리 관련 자료들을 소개합니다.
